When a small business needs laptops, the choice is usually between buying new and buying refurbished. Both have a place. Here is how to decide.

Cost

A refurbished business laptop typically costs a fraction of the same model new. For a small team that can mean equipping several people for the price of one or two new machines, which frees up budget for software, training or growth.

Build quality

Business ranges such as Dell Latitude, HP EliteBook and Lenovo ThinkPad are built for years of daily use, with stronger cases, better keyboards and parts that are easy to replace. A refurbished business model often outlasts a new budget consumer laptop at the same price.

Warranty and returns

Buy from a seller that tests every machine and offers a warranty and a returns period. That gives you the same peace of mind you would expect from new, and a clear route if anything goes wrong.

Know what the grade means

Refurbished laptops are sold by cosmetic grade. A higher grade means fewer marks on the case and screen. The grade should not affect how the laptop works, so pick the grade that suits how the machine will be used.

When new makes sense

New can be the better choice if you need the very latest processor for heavy design or video work, a specific model that has only just been released, or a manufacturer support contract that runs for several years.

Better for the planet

Most of the carbon footprint of a laptop comes from making it. Every refurbished machine you buy is one fewer new laptop that has to be manufactured, which helps your business cut its environmental impact.
