Factory reset vs data wiping: why a reset is not enough

Many organisations reset old laptops and phones before getting rid of them and assume the data is gone. That is not always true. Here is the difference between a reset and proper data wiping.

What a factory reset does

A factory reset returns the operating system to its original state and removes your accounts and settings. On some devices, especially older ones without full encryption, it marks old data as free space rather than overwriting it, so recovery software can sometimes bring files back.

What data wiping does

Proper data wiping uses specialist software to overwrite or securely erase the whole drive, including areas the operating system does not normally touch. The NIST 800-88 standard sets out two levels, Clear and Purge, chosen according to how sensitive the data is.

SSDs need the right method

Solid state drives store data differently from traditional hard drives. Wiping them properly needs methods designed for SSDs, which is one more reason a simple reset or file deletion is not enough.

Proof matters

Even if a reset did remove everything, you would have no way to prove it. A data wiping certificate for each device gives you a record for audits and for UK GDPR.

Let us handle it

Impactech wipes every drive to NIST 800-88 standards at our Bedford site, or shreds it if it cannot be wiped, and gives you a certificate for each device. Collection is free across the UK. Call 07349 960040 or email info@impactechno.com.
