Choosing who handles your old IT equipment matters. The right company protects your data, keeps you on the right side of waste law and gets as much reuse as possible from your kit. Here are six things to check.
A registered waste carrier
Any company that collects your equipment must be a registered waste carrier. Ask for the registration number and check it on the Environment Agency public register. If they cannot give you one, look elsewhere.
A recognised wiping standard
Ask how drives are wiped. A good answer names a recognised standard such as NIST 800-88, and explains what happens to drives that cannot be wiped, which should be physically destroyed.
A certificate for every device
You should get a data wiping or destruction certificate for each device, ideally matched to its serial number. This is your proof for audits, insurers and UK GDPR.
Clear paperwork
Check what records you will receive for the collection itself, so you can show where your equipment went and meet your duty of care.
Reuse before recycling
The best companies refurbish and reuse working equipment first and only recycle what cannot be reused. This is better for the environment and can reduce your costs.
Clear costs
Ask up front what you will pay for collection, wiping and recycling, and whether there are minimum quantities. Avoid surprises on the invoice.
